Text Box: Early Church History…
The first Presbyterian Church has had a long and successful history of ministering to the community from the earliest days of the gold rush to the present. But due to the course of events in the beginning, it is difficult to pinpoint an exact date for the beginning.

But in the beginning…

The very first minister to arrive in Skagway was Robert M. Dickey, a Canadian Presbyterian right out of seminary. In fact, Dickey was actually still a second year student when his professors urged him to accept his ordination and join the Klondike Gold rush to minister to the stampeding miners.

Even though they could not know how the border dispute would be decided and whether this area would eventually become American or Canadian, the Canadian Presbyterians were concerned for the massive numbers pushing into the area and earnest in their desire to establish churches here and throughout the Klondike. At the same time it appears the American Presbyterians were not interested in the Klondike or Skagway, although Presbyterian minister and missionary, Sheldon Jackson, had already established churches in Haines, Juneau and Wrangell, and was just starting up a school in Sitka.
